The weekend of the 24th through the 26th I was fortunate enough to attend the 2nd annual Southern New England FOOLS H.O.T weekend. As always the brotherhood was out in force and a great weekend was had by all. Many drills were conducted over the two days that challenged even the most seasoned firefighter. For me the most signifigant scenario was the mayday drill which ended with a great prop simulating a floor collapse dropping the firefighter about 18-20 inches before landing on a gymnastic cushion. Believe me, when you don't know its coming the short distance is enough.

Friday nights lecture of a fatal fire that occured in Clinton, MA drove the nail home that this type of scenario could happen to anyone on anyday. An unexpected situation occured on what appeared to be a nickel and dime fire and it went to hell and a handbasket in a matter of seconds. I took out of it some thoughts on situational awareness and my preparedness to deal with the un-expected.

I will recommend that if you have the time next year to attend this event you should. The members of this organization and the brothers that came from literally across the country to be there shows that there is a real commitment to training, and the job. Thanks goes out to all the instructers and behind the scenes workers-they never get enought credit-for making a smooth and eventful weekend where I am sure that everyone walked away with something. I know I did and cannot wait till next year.

June 25, 2008: The members of the Submarine Base FD assisted in a base wide safety fair by conducting an extrication drill for onlookers and base personnel. All shift members were utilized as the simualtion was a two car T-bone with severe structual damage as well as two patients (mannequins) C-11 and 25 utilized both sets of extrication equipment and C-100 took care of EMS.

October 19, 2007: Subase Engine 11 with C-200 responded to the commissary parking lot for an MVA reported with injuries. On arrival companies found a pick up truck with extensive passenger compartment damage after striking a parked tractor trailer then continuing on. A good samaritan was able to stop the driver from driving away. C-200 transported one from the scene with a head injury. There were no other hazards on the scene and Engine 11 was made available.

OCT. 15, 2007: I would like to thank the Southern New England FOOLS for a great training weekend at the Union Fire District training grounds in Union, RI. A slew of great instructors from all aspects of the fire service and a great group of students to train with. Hats off to the SNE FOOLS and their staff for all they do for the firefighting community and the public. If you are not a member check out their website www.snefools.org and see if you are a FOOL. Thanks again guys, will be looking forward to the next one.

July 2, 2007: New London Fire Department responded to 170 Broad Street for a reported structure fire. Enroute Station A reported a fire in the roof area at that location and that the employees made an attempt to extinguish. Upon arrival a working fire was transmitted moving A-31 up as the FAST team. Members opened up and exposed hidden fire in between the ceiling and roof and made quick work once access was gained. One firefighter was transported with minor injuries. Their extent were unkown but appeared to be minor at the scene. All companies operated at this job including the Lawerence and Memorial Paramedics.

June 18, 2007: At approx. 0745 companies from the Waterford Fire Department (Cohanzie, Quaker Hill and Oswegatchie) and Montville FD (for additional Engine) were initially dispatched to this 2 1/2 story home for a report of smoke coming from the roof. Upon first arriving officer size-up, a working fire was transmitted for smoke and fire from a rear bedroom. Upon striking the working fire, firefighters from the Submarine Base FD responded in as the FAST company. Crews encountered a small fire in the ceiling and attic space. Fire crews took about 15-20 minutes to extinguish the fire. No injuries were reported.

April 14, 2007: Members of the Submarine Base Fire Department hosted the Enfield Fire Department in live burn operations on Saturday. An all day series of training evolutions took place including roof operations, wall breaching, VES and advanced FAST techniques. Live fire evolutions included kitchen fires and room and contents (bedroom) fires. This kind of valuable training is needed to keep our skills up to top notch. Thanks goes out to CENTEX construction company and the SBFD Training Division in allowing us the great opportunities we have had over the past months. Without the coordination from all entities it wouldn't have been able to happen. THANKS!!!

March 23, 2007: Members of the Submarine Base Fire Department conducted live fire training in aquired structures being replaced by new navy housing units. Drills consisted of Incident Command, hose stretching, ventilation and search procedures.

March 14, 2007: The Oswegatchie and Cohanzie Fire Departments responded to I-95 Northbound in the high speed lane for a one car MVA rollover. Minor injuries were reported at the scene. This photo was taken on a drive-by while enroute to East Lyme, got lucky in the clarity as I was traveling about 65-70 mph.

January 2, 2007: The Quaker Hill, Cohanzie and Oswegatchie were dispatched to a house fire at the corners of Rt. 32 and Fitzgerald Rd in Quaker Hill. Enroute Station W reported receiving multiple calls and confirmation of fire as well as the possibility of an elderly person still in the home. Upon arrival a heavy smoke condition was observed and fire in the C, D side of the home. First in companies stretched multilple handlines and began primary searches while ventilation operations were being established. Primary searches proved negative and the occupant had escaped successfully. The main body of fire was knocked down in approx. 25 minutes.

December 21, 2006: Members of Engine 11 and Ladder Co. 15 of the Submarine Base Fire Department responded to a tractor trailer truck vs. hydrant. The hydrant was sheared off at its base resulting in this geiser that flowed an unspecified amount of time. No injuries were reported. The hydrant was shut down with the assistance of the public works department

November 18, 2006: Members of the Old Mystic and Mystic Fire Departments responded to Flanders road for a reported structure fire. On arrival members found a chimney problem with some minor extenion around the stove pipe. Members from both departments made quick work of a situation which could have been a lot worse.

September 3, 2006: SBFD vs. FDNL-Rained out? Sort of, unfortunatly a full team couldn't be fielded on the opposing team...weather being a large factor..so a mixed game/practice was held instead. This went very well and another game is being scheduled. Hopefully when the next one is scheduled the sun will prevail!!! Thanks to all those who participated!!

August 23, 2006: Members of the Submarine Base Fire Department (B-shift) conducted victim removal drills at Fire Department Headquarters. Evolutions consisted of unconscious civilian, conscious civilian and unconscious firefighter using a high-anchor pulley system and the Gemtor harness.

On Monday, August 21, 2006, members from the Subase FD conducted a conventional forcible entry drill at an acquired building on the base. While Forcible Entry scenarios were happening other members were learning and practicing the Denver Drill.

August 22, 2006: The Poquonnock Bridge and Center Groton FD's responded to 1130 North Road, Starr-Lite caterers, for a catering truck fire with impingement onto its propane tanks. The quick response and knockdown of fire allowed for this not to be a bigger tragedy than it could of been.

August 17, 2006: The Poquonnock Bridge and Subase FD responded to the former Golden Gate restraunt on Route-12 for a reported car into the building. Subase C-12 (covering for C-25) was first on scene and reported one car into the building with minor structual damage and moderate front end damage of the motor vehicle. No injuries were reported on the scene, only a minor fluid spill. Members of PBFD applied speedi-dri while members from SBFD ensured there was no fire conditions in the engine compartment.

August 9, 2006: Members of the Old Mystic, Mystic and Wequetequock fire departments participated in live burn evolutions at the former Ashbys restraunt located on Rt. 27 in Old Mystic. After several interior training evolutions the building was let to burn through and eventually to the ground. Many spectators were on hand to watch these evolutions, maybe getting a better idea as to what the fire service is all about.

July 29, 2006: New London Fire Department responded to 78-88 State street for a reported structure fire in the old Cronin Building. Upon arrival a smoke condition was observed from the street. Battalion One assumed command and first due companies reported a fire on the second floor. Battalion One requested an additional chief due to the possible complexity of this fire and a second alarm was also transmitted. Initial handlines were stretched to aggressivly fight this fire and in only a matter of minutes was the fire knocked down. An additional tower ladder was also requested and W-55 from the Cohanzie Fire Department responded to the scene. After extensive overhaul to ensure there was no extension the under control was given by the battalion.

An early morning call for C-100 led the ambulance crew to this vehicle which had been involved in an MVA reportedly in the Old Saybrook area. The driver continued on and upon entering the main gate at Subase New London complained of neck and back pain. A fluid spill occured once the vehicle stopped summoning Engine 11 for speedi-dry and clean-up.

May 3, 2006: Subase Fire Department responded to Nutmeg Way in navy housing for a construction dump truck rolled on its side. Upon arrival of Subase Engine 25, which was being covered by members from Engine 11 due to live fire training, a fluid spill and one patient was found. Members were split to deal with haz-mat and patient care. No serious injuries were reported and scene was cleared after truck was uprighted.
